Artist Statement
Joseph Carter is a self-taught artist from Omaha, NE and is now based in Chicago, IL. His body of work pays homage to the development of technology and the advancement of printmaking and photography processes. He documents images of the mundane and hopes to evoke feelings of nostalgia and connectedness in the viewer. Joseph’s recent work is informed by the perception of his personal experience with anxiety and navigation toward acceptance and understanding. He also examines his journey to bring critical awareness to his dichotomous thinking patterns and challenges these with paradoxical thinking, with the hope of seeing things from multiple perspectives. These concepts are reflected in his black-and-white images, which adhere to strict technical principles and archival materials, and in his conscious decisions of when to break those traditional rules. Carter’s work has been exhibited internationally in galleries including; Bemis Center for Contemporary Art (Omaha, NE), Kunstmuseum Bonn (Bonn, DE), and 5/R Hall & Gallery (Nagoya, JP).
